English-speaking Lawyer in Dubai: How to Choose the Right Office?
An English-speaking lawyer in Dubai is what every resident, investor or visitor who does not speak Arabic looks for when they want to understand their legal position in their own language before signing a contract, paying money or attending a hearing. The direct answer: AWADH ALMHEIRI LAW FIRM AND LEGAL CONSULTATIONS communicates with its clients in English for consultations, correspondence and case follow-up, and at the same time handles the work before the Dubai courts in Arabic, as the law requires.
Language is only half of the matter. Dubai courts work in Arabic, pleadings are written in Arabic, and foreign documents are accepted only with a certified translation. A lawyer who is fluent in English alone is not enough, and neither is a strong advocate who cannot explain to you what is happening in your file. You need a lawyer who speaks English with you and masters Arabic before the judge.
This page is part of our Legal Consultations in Dubai section. It explains what an English-speaking lawyer in Dubai does for you, what you should know about court language, translation and bilingual contracts, and how to choose the right firm.
Who Needs an English-Speaking Lawyer in Dubai?
Most people searching for an English-speaking lawyer in Dubai fall into four groups: a foreign employee whose contract was terminated or whose dues are late; an investor setting up a company or joining an existing one; a property buyer or tenant in dispute with the developer or the landlord; and a visitor or resident surprised by a police report or a travel ban. There is a fifth group that matters just as much: the Arabic-speaking employee or PRO looking for a lawyer on behalf of a foreign manager or partner.
What they have in common is that they receive official papers in Arabic that they cannot read: a court notice, a notarial warning, a letter from a government authority, or a twenty-page contract. Any delay in understanding that paper may cost a legal deadline that does not come back.
What Does an English-Speaking Lawyer in Dubai Do for You?
Legal consultation in English
We hear your facts in English and explain your legal position, your options and the expected risks in the same language, with no intermediary relaying the conversation and dropping what matters to you.
Explaining Arabic documents
Court notices, judgments, legal warnings and letters from government authorities: we explain what each paper says, what follows from it, and which deadline starts running from it.
Written updates and correspondence in English
You receive updates on your file in English after every hearing or procedure, so you know what was done and what comes next, and you can share them with your management or your partner abroad.
Reviewing and drafting contracts in both languages
We review a contract written in English or in both languages before you sign, check that the two versions match, and draft contracts and agreements in Arabic and English.
Representation before courts and authorities
Attendance, pleading and filing memoranda in Arabic before the Dubai courts and the other courts of the UAE, the Public Prosecution, police stations and dispute resolution committees.
If you do not yet know whether you need a consultation only or a full mandate, read Legal Consultations in the UAE to see the difference between the two and when each is enough.
Court Language in Dubai: Why Is English Alone Not Enough?
Under the Civil Procedure Law, the language of the courts is Arabic. If a party or a witness does not know Arabic, the court hears them through an interpreter after the oath is taken. In practice this means the statement of claim, memoranda and applications are filed in Arabic and the judgment is issued in Arabic, whatever the language of the contract or the nationality of the parties.
The same law allows a decision that, in certain specialised circuits or specific cases, the language of the trial and the proceedings be English. That is an exception made by a decision of the competent judicial authority, not an option a litigant can choose alone.
The courts of the Dubai International Financial Centre, on the other hand, operate in English and under different procedural rules, and access to them depends on their jurisdiction and on the agreement of the parties. Details are in Issues of the Dubai International Financial Centre and Abu Dhabi Global Market.
This is why an English-speaking lawyer in Dubai is only fully useful if the firm also masters legal drafting in Arabic: the judge will read the Arabic memorandum, not the English explanation you received.
Certified Legal Translation of Foreign Documents
Every document written in a foreign language that you wish to file with the court must be accompanied by a certified Arabic translation. Under the law regulating the translation profession, a translation is certified only if it is made by a translator or a translation house registered with the Ministry of Justice. A translation you prepare yourself, or one prepared by an employee of your company, is not accepted, however accurate it is.
The lawyer's role here is not to translate but to decide what deserves translating in the first place. Translating hundreds of pages of correspondence is a needless cost if the claim rests on a contract and three emails. This is where an English-speaking lawyer in Dubai adds value: reading your documents in their original language, selecting what serves your claim, then reviewing the translation before filing so that the meaning of a clause does not change because of one word.
Documents issued outside the UAE, such as powers of attorney, marriage certificates and company incorporation documents, need to be attested by the issuing country and by the competent UAE authorities before they are translated.
A Contract in Arabic and English: Which Version Prevails?
Many contracts in Dubai are written in two columns, Arabic and English. The common mistake is for the foreign party to read the English column only and sign. If the two texts differ and the dispute reaches the court, the court looks at the Arabic text, or at the certified Arabic translation of the contract.
The solution comes before signing, not after: the contract should contain an express clause stating which language prevails in case of discrepancy, and a lawyer who speaks both English and Arabic should check the two versions clause by clause, especially the clauses on price, term, termination, penalties and the forum for disputes.
For more on the clauses that protect you, see Drafting Contracts and Agreements in the UAE.

How to Choose an English-Speaking Lawyer in Dubai
“We speak English†appears on most law firm websites, so do not stop there. Before you engage, ask about four things:
Is the firm licensed and the advocate registered?
Under the law regulating the legal profession and legal consultancy, only a registered advocate may plead before the courts. You can check the licence of any firm in Dubai through the Government of Dubai Legal Affairs Department.
Who will actually speak to me in English?
Ask who will really follow your file: a legal professional who understands the case, or a receptionist passing messages on? The difference shows at the first precise legal question.
Will I receive written updates?
A written update in English after every hearing protects you and protects the firm, and saves you calling to ask what happened.
Are the scope and the fees clear in writing?
Ask for a fee agreement that states what the work covers and what it does not, and ask for its terms to be explained to you in English before you sign.
