Lawyer Fees in Dubai: What is the Cost of a Case?

Lawyer Fees in Dubai: What is the Cost of a Case?

Lawyer fees in Dubai are not governed by a single price or an official tariff. They are set by a written agreement between you and the lawyer before the work begins, according to the type and value of the case, the effort and time it requires, and the stages of litigation the agreement covers. The cost of a case itself has two separate parts: the lawyer's fees, and the court fees fixed by the law on judicial fees in the Dubai Courts.

That is the direct answer for anyone asking how much a lawyer charges for a case in Dubai. The real risk, however, lies not in the figure but in the way it is agreed. Local newspapers regularly report judgments in disputes over legal fees: a client ordered to pay millions of dirhams after his money was recovered, a firm that claimed a large sum and was awarded a small part of it, and others who paid in advance without a contract and then had nothing to prove what had been agreed.

In this article we explain what determines lawyer fees in Dubai, how the cost of a case and the court fees are calculated, when the fees themselves turn into a court case, and where our firm stands with you at each stage. It is part of our litigation series, which starts with Enforcement of Judgments and Travel Bans in the UAE.

How much are lawyer fees in Dubai, and why is there no single price?

Anyone searching for lawyer fees in Dubai finds hourly figures and per-case figures online, all of them general estimates that bind no one. The reason is that the law sets no price list for legal fees. It leaves them to the agreement of the parties and gives that agreement clear rules: it must be in writing, it must come before the work starts, and it must define the work entrusted to the lawyer.

This is why two cases with the same name can carry very different fees. A money claim on a clear written instrument decided by a payment order is not the same as a commercial dispute between partners that needs an accounting expert and years of pleading, and a simple police complaint is not the same as a felony before the criminal court. A figure quoted to you before your papers are read is worth nothing, and may change at the first turn in the case.

The rule our firm works by

We do not set fees before studying the documents and knowing the scope of the work required. We start by understanding the subject of the case and your position in it, then tell you in writing what we will do, at which stage, and what falls outside the agreement.

What determines the lawyer's fees in your case?

Under the law regulating the legal profession and legal consultancy, five considerations are taken into account in assessing fees. They are the same ones the court turns to when a dispute between a lawyer and a client is brought before it:

The type and nature of the work

Is it a consultation, the drafting of a contract, a legal notice, or a full lawsuit? And how much effort and skill does this particular work require?

The time expected to complete the work

A case that ends in a few hearings differs from a dispute that goes through technical expertise, appeal and cassation, and then an enforcement file.

The importance of the case and the interests at stake

The value of the claim, and what losing it would mean: imprisonment, deportation, attachment of assets or a travel ban.

The lawyer's experience and standing

The level of registration, seniority and the reputation of the firm. A lawyer licensed to plead before the courts differs from an entity that only gives advice, as we explain in Legal Consultant Lawyer in Dubai.

The firm's expenses

The research, costs and burdens the firm bears for the sake of the case.

Note that these considerations do not include the client's nationality. Lawyer fees in Dubai do not differ between a citizen and a resident; they differ with the case itself.

How are lawyer fees calculated: fixed amount, hourly rate or percentage?

The law allows more than one way of agreeing legal fees, and each has its place and its risks:

A fixed amount for the work or for a stage

This is the most common in court cases. The agreement may cover the whole dispute, one stage of it such as the appeal or cassation, the enforcement proceedings, or a single procedural act. The risk here is that the client believes the amount covers every level of court, while the contract speaks of the court of first instance only.

The hourly system

Fees may be agreed according to the hourly system applied by the firm. It suits consultations, negotiation and contract review, but it needs clarity on how time is recorded and reported to the client.

A percentage of the amount awarded

The law allows it on condition that it does not exceed 25% of the value of the right awarded, that the agreement is written before the work starts, and that the fees are not a share in kind of the disputed rights. This percentage is not due if the case is lost.

Any clause that breaches these rules exposes the whole agreement to nullity and sends the assessment of fees back to the court. We set out the conditions of the percentage and the contract clauses in detail in Lawyer Fees in the UAE: 25% Rate and Contract Terms.

Is there an official lawyers' fee schedule for 2026?

A question that keeps appearing in search engines is: what is the lawyers' fee schedule for 2026? The answer is that no official schedule fixes the fees of a lawyer you appoint by your own choice, neither in Dubai nor in the other emirates. The only schedule mentioned in the executive regulations of the law is a guiding schedule the court uses to assess the fees of a lawyer whom the court itself assigns to defend an accused in felony cases. It has nothing to do with the agreement between a client and the client's lawyer.

Any published price list therefore remains the opinion of whoever published it. The only reference that binds you and the lawyer is the fee agreement signed between you.

The cost of a case in Dubai: court fees are not lawyer fees

Many people confuse lawyer fees with court fees. Lawyer fees are paid to the firm for its work. Court fees are paid to the Dubai Courts when a claim, an appeal or an enforcement file is registered. They are fixed by the law on judicial fees in the Dubai Courts and its amendments, and the lawyer cannot change them. The main provisions for claims of a stated value are:

6%

Registration fee before the Court of First Instance, calculated on the value of the claim, with a minimum of AED 500, in cases other than personal status

AED 20,000, then 30,000, then 40,000

Maximum fee by value of the claim: up to AED 500,000, then up to AED 1 million, then above AED 1 million

5%

Fee for a labour claim above AED 100,000, with a maximum of AED 20,000

50%

Appeal fee, as a share of the fee paid before the Court of First Instance, plus a cash deposit of AED 1,000

AED 2,000

Fixed fee for an appeal in cassation, plus a cash deposit of AED 3,000

2%

Enforcement fee on the value for which enforcement is requested, between AED 200 and AED 5,000

Other costs are added to these and vary from case to case, such as the expert's deposit, legal translation and service of notices.

The firm's role here is to calculate this cost for you before registration, not after it, and to choose the less costly and faster route where the law allows. Choosing the wrong route means paying fees twice, as we explain in How to File a Lawsuit in Dubai?.

Who pays the lawyer fees and the costs of the case: the loser or the client?

Court fees are in the end an obligation on the party ordered by the judgment to bear the costs of the case. If you win, your opponent is charged with the fees, and an appeal by the opponent does not prevent their collection.

The fees agreed with your own lawyer, however, are your obligation under the contract, whether you win or lose, unless the agreement is for a percentage of the amount awarded. What the court orders the losing party to pay towards legal fees does not necessarily cover what you agreed with your firm. Those who base their decision on the idea that the opponent will pay everything discover the truth after judgment.

When do lawyer fees turn into a case against you?

A legal fees case is a claim or application brought by the lawyer or the client before the court when they disagree on the fees. The judgments of the Dubai Courts reported in the local press show recurring forms of this dispute:

A percentage agreed, then a refusal to pay

A published judgment ordered an individual and a company to pay AED 8.64 million in legal fees for the recovery of AED 31 million, together with interest, fees and costs. A percentage that looks small at signature becomes a large sum at collection.

A claim without a clear agreement

A published judgment assessed a law firm's fees at AED 50,000 instead of the AED 2.5 million it claimed, in a dispute over the fees of a case worth AED 40 million. Where the contract is missing or void, the court assesses the fees in proportion to the effort made and the benefit the client obtained.

An amount adjusted by the court

A published report told of a court raising a lawyer's fees from AED 10,000 to AED 50,000. The law allows the court that heard the case to reduce the fees if it finds them excessive, and to increase them if the lawyer spent more effort and time than estimated.

There are other risks that do not reach the newspapers but recur in law offices:

Dismissing the lawyer midway

If the client dismisses the lawyer without a legitimate reason after the work has started, the client must pay the full agreed fees as if the lawyer had completed the work in the client's favour.

Settlement with the opponent

If the case ends by a settlement within what the client authorised, the lawyer is entitled to the full agreed fees unless there is an agreement to the contrary.

Cases that branch from the original case

If claims and work arise from the case that were not taken into account in the agreement, the lawyer may claim fees for them. This is where surprises come from when the contract does not define its scope precisely.

The documents

The client loses the right to demand from the lawyer the papers and documents deposited with him if the full agreed fees have not been paid.

All these outcomes are decided on the day the contract is signed, not on the day of the dispute. This is why our firm makes sure that the contract states the scope of the work, the levels of litigation, the payment dates and what happens on settlement or termination, and that this is explained to the client before signing.

How much are lawyer fees in criminal cases?

There is no fixed figure in criminal cases either, but their nature changes the way the agreement is made. There is no awarded sum from which a percentage can be calculated, and the work is usually divided into stages: attendance before the police and the Public Prosecution, then the trial, then appeal and cassation. The law allows the agreement to relate to a specific stage, so the contract must state the stage it covers.

The most serious point in criminal cases is that delaying the appointment of a lawyer out of hesitation over fees may cost more than the fees themselves, because statements given in the first report stay in the file to the end. If an accused in a felony cannot appoint a lawyer, the court assigns one and assesses his fees itself.

Lawyer fees before the Dubai Courts: how does our firm work with you?

Agreeing the fees is not a financial step that precedes the case. It is part of managing it. This is how it works with us from the first contact:

Review

Reading the documents before any figure

We examine the contracts, correspondence and any previous judgments, and determine the legal characterisation of the dispute, the competent court and the time limits that govern it, including those explained in Statute of Limitations in the UAE: When Do You Lose Your Right to Claim?.

Scope

Defining the work required

We tell you whether you need a legal notice, a settlement or a lawsuit, which levels of litigation the work covers, and what court fees to expect at each stage.

Agreement

A written fee agreement

The fee agreement is signed before the work starts and the power of attorney is executed before the Notary Public. This can also be done for those living abroad, as we explain in How to Appoint a Lawyer While Outside the UAE?.

Follow-up

Keeping you informed at every stage

The lawyer is bound by law to inform the client of the stages of the case, the decisions and judgments issued in it and the time limits for appeal. Our firm provides this to the client in writing.

Enforcement

Collecting the right after judgment

A judgment is worth nothing if it is not enforced. We therefore make clear from the outset whether the agreement covers the enforcement file or whether it needs a separate agreement.

Time limits and figures to know before agreeing the fees

25%

The maximum fee where it is agreed as a percentage of the amount awarded

25%

The most a lawyer may receive out of the agreed fees if dismissed before starting the work, for the effort made in preparation

15 days

Time limit for the lawyer or the client to file a grievance against the fee assessment order, from the day after notification of the order

3 years

Period after which the lawyer's right to claim fees lapses, counted from the end of the mandate, the completion of the work or the dismissal

Before you sign: what do we review with you in the fee agreement?

Is the agreement written and made before the work?

A verbal agreement or a passing message protects neither you nor the lawyer, and ends with an assessment by the court.

What work do the fees cover?

First instance only, or appeal, cassation and enforcement as well? Are counterclaims and urgent applications included?

Who bears the court fees and costs?

Lawyer fees do not include court fees, the expert's deposit or translation unless this is expressly stated.

What happens to the fees on settlement or termination?

These two points are the source of most disputes and must be settled in the contract.

Is the party you are contracting with licensed to plead?

Paying the fees of a case to an entity that has no right of audience before the courts means paying them twice. A lawyer's registration can be checked in the lawyers' directory of the Government of Dubai Legal Affairs Department.

Frequently asked questions about lawyer fees in Dubai

QHow much does a lawyer charge for one case in Dubai?

There is no fixed amount. Lawyer fees in Dubai are set by a written agreement according to the type and value of the case, the expected time and effort, and the levels of litigation the agreement covers. A serious figure is one given after the documents have been studied.

QWhat are lawyers' prices in the UAE?

There is no official tariff in any emirate. Federal law leaves the fees to the agreement between the lawyer and the client and sets rules for it, the most important being that it is written before the work starts and capped at 25% where it is a percentage of the amount awarded.

QHow are lawyer fees calculated?

In one of three ways: a fixed amount for the work or for each stage, the hourly system applied by the firm, or a percentage of the amount awarded within the limits the law allows.

QWhat is the lawyers' fee schedule for 2026?

There is no official schedule for the fees of a lawyer chosen by the client. The schedule mentioned in the executive regulations is a guide and concerns only the fees of lawyers assigned by the court in felony cases.

QWhat is a legal fees case?

It is the application or claim brought by the lawyer to recover his fees, or by the client to have them reduced. If the fees relate to a case heard by a court, the request for assessment is submitted to that court by petition. If they relate to other work, a claim is filed in the usual way.

QDo I still owe the fees if I lose the case?

Fees agreed as a fixed amount remain due, because the lawyer's obligation is to exercise due care, not to guarantee the result. If the agreement is for a percentage of the amount awarded, it is not due when the case is lost.

QCan the court reduce the agreed lawyer fees?

Yes. The court that heard the case may reduce the fees at the client's request if it finds them excessive in relation to the effort and the benefit. Fees may not be reduced or increased if they were agreed after the work was completed.

QWhat if there is no fee agreement between me and the lawyer?

In a dispute, the court assesses the fees in proportion to the effort the lawyer made and the benefit you obtained. This is a long road with an uncertain result for both sides, which is why our firm does not start any work before the agreement is signed.
